Local Eco-conscious B&B Earns Honorable Mention

An eco-conscious vibe and opportunities for conservation and energy efficiency education. These are the amenities that have earned the Artha Sustainable Living Center in Amherst, WI an “honorable mention” in The Wisconsin Department of Tourism’s 2010 Top 10 list of Eco-elegant Bed & Breakfasts. The Artha Bed & Breakfast is certified by the WI Department of Tourism’s Travel Green Wisconsin voluntary certification program.

The owners, Bob and Marguerite Ramlow, have owned 90 acres of wooded land and rolling fields since 1971 and opened Artha Bed and Breakfast four years ago. Water, heat and electricity are all powered by solar power. They feature gourmet breakfasts using local organic food and coffee. Sheets and towels are made from organic cotton. And natural cleaning and laundering products are used.

Not only do they offer a great eco-friendly getaway, the Ramlows incorporate educational opportunities to guests and visitors. Renewable Energy training services, system design and renewable energy education services are offered on site at Artha or at remote facilities. Year round hands-on workshops, retreats and classes are available in these areas as well:

  • solar water heating
  • yoga
  • herbs and their uses
  • and more

Bob Ramlow is the author of Solar Water Heating, A Comprehensive Guide to Solar Water and Space Heating Systems. Bob Ramlow is a NABCEPTM certified solar thermal installer, an ISPQ Independent Master Trainer in Solar Thermal and has 30 years experience designing, installing and repairing solar hot water and space heating systems.

Marguerite Ramlow is a trained vinyasa flow style yoga instructor and offers classes to both guests and the public. She is a 200 hour Yoga Alliance Certified Yoga Teacher and has been teaching since 1998.

“We want to show people they can live sustainably and be very comfortable,” said Marguerite in an article in the Stevens Point Journal. “Just having our name out there will make people aware there is a place like this nearby.”
