Attracting Gen. Y’ers

Are you green? If so, you may have an edge in attracting Gen Y workers.

According to a recent study completed by Johnson Controls, when Gen Y’ers are reviewing potential employers, being green is key. Ninety-six percent said they’re looking for an “environmentally aware or friendly workplace.” It is, in fact, becoming a major factor in attracting top talent across the nation. But take note —mere compliance isn’t enough. Fifty-seven percent of Gen Y’ers surveyed expect their employer to perform well above standard regulatory compliance.

Green is important to Gen Y’ers in their personal life and they see work as an extension of that personal life. So, they seek a work environment and work culture that matches their green values.  According to the study, that means that green policies should be part of day-to-day operations — offering flexible working and travel patterns that allow for a mix of telecommuting and in-office work schedules.

According to the report, Gen Y’ers want to see the following green practices in place:

  • Recycling bins (70%)
  • Water-saving devices and fixtures (47%)
  • Stand-by modes for all electrical equipment (52%)
  • Shared office printers (72%)
  • Solar panels on site (47%)
